A walk to Los Gigantes on TENERIFE.

Sunday 18 January.

I wakened early this morning and made a cup of tea. Moira was still sound asleep and I kept quiet and read the newspaper until she woke up an hour later. I then got up, stretched and set off for my run. I headed along the front, pushed hard up the hill to the path that cut the corner to the rough coastal path. Before reaching that path I did reps on the long straight stretch of the tiled path. I measured it roughly and estimated it to be 150 m. I did 6 reps at a good sprint jogging back between them to the start of the next one. I continued along the rough track at a steady pace and unfortunately tripped on a rock and fell. I cut my leg, arm and hand but got up quickly and continued. I ran a bit further along the track about another 200 m after my last finishing spot before turning back. There were lots of motorhomes parked on the beach, I think they belonged to surfers, here for the weekend. When I got back to the tiled straight I did two reps fast on the up part and one on the down. That was a total of 9 reps for the session. I then headed back at a good pace once I had recovered from my sprints. My time was 57:52 minutes my fastest yet.

I stretched and when I got into the flat had a shower right away to wash my cuts and bruises from the fall. They weren't too bad but I was feeling stiff and sore now from the tumble. I relaxed on the couch and Moira served me with my breakfast, the weekend Full English. I watched the end of 'Match of the Day' on the TV then the first part of the 'Andrew Marr Show' before changing to the radio on the iPad for some music.

At 10 am we decided to go for a walk. We went to Los Gigantes again, following the coastal path round to the seaside town. Instead of going to the harbour we picked a street leading to the beach. It was another black sanded beach from the volcanic deposits. There were a few people lying stretched out sunbathing and another couple perched on the rocks reading, it looked very uncomfortable. We watched the surf breaking for a while before heading back. We took the climb to the roundabout at Lidl's supermarket where Moira check out the store and bought a baguette for lunch. From there we took the contour route round the hill to the gym and down. The weather had been perfect, a clear blue sky and warm. Moira managed the walk all right and seems to have recovered from the bug she had picked up. We are now planning a more adventurous outing to the hills for during the week.

Back at the flat we sat outside on the veranda and had lunch; the nice crusted bread form Lidl with Camembert cheese. I had the radio tuned in through the Internet and we listened to Johnnie Walker's 'Sounds of the 70's' on BBC Radio 2. There were a lot of people down at the pool side sunbathing but we made do with sitting in the shade of the awning over the veranda.

For dinner tonight Moira made a lovely mushroom omelette for dinner with a salad. After I washed up we had 'Countryfile' on TV from the Lake District, it must have been recorded recently with all the peaks showing a good covering of snow; we are glad to be away from the cold weather of the UK and enjoying the sunshine here. Later on TV we had the final part of the 'Foyle's War' series. It was reported that the guy who writes the series had decided he had had enough and stopped ! But the way it ended tonight left plenty of openings for a continuation in the future.
