First visit to the gym on TENERIFE

Thursday 15 January.

This morning on my run it was some quality work. After warming up on the route out through town I pushed up the hill just after Mercadona, then on the tiled path to the coastal path I sprinted about 200m. I ran out by the coastal path to the point where there were a few surfers out on their boards and there turned back. At the stretch where I had sprinted earlier I did another two fast reps before heading for the hill where it was two reps there. When I got back I was pleasantly surprised that I had been running for 50:57 minutes, over 8 km. I stretched and headed up to the flat for breakfast.

Moira still wasn't feeling very well and was in bed. She didn't go out today but did get up later to sit outside in the warm sunshine. I read after breakfast and listened to the radio. At 11 am I went to the gym. On the radio this morning they were on about a study by one of he Universities that said a 20 minute walk every day increases your life expectancy, the walk to the gym was about 20 minutes and it was nearly all uphill, maybe I didn't need to bother with my workout.

It had been a tough climb up the hills and I was thoroughly warmed up by the time I got there. I did my easy routine with dumbbells for my biceps and deltoids. After that it was a series of exercises for my upper body and abs. The gym wasn't particularly big but it is well equipped. There aren't any cardio machines, the treadmills and cycles are in a separate part of the complex. I didn't go mad and kept the weights reasonable; I felt good afterwards. I found a more direct route back to the flat.

It was lunch time when I got back and Moira was beginning to feel better. In the afternoon I began to get all my diary entries for the Via Francigena together on a Word Document to make into a book to publish on Kindle. I had to go into Google Docs to copy each month's entries then paste them into Word on the laptop. It was a long frustrating process with the slow Internet connection and Microsoft not being as user friendly as working with the iPad. Unfortunately Kindle will only accept the book in the Word format for publication and I haven't got Word on the iPad. Eventually I got it all transferred and got one day of the diary edited. It will be a long job but I have over two months here to work on it.

After dinner tonight I watched some TV programmes that I had downloaded from IPlayer. At 9 pm we watched an episode in the new 'Death in Paradise' murder series on TV, it was quite good.
