Monday 12 January.
It was out for a run again this morning at 7:30 am after a bit of stretching. At the main road along the front I turned in the other direction today. There was a steep hill to start then down the other side to pick up a path that ran around at the bottom of the steep cliff. It looked like it was going right along the side of the cliff and around the bays that indented the coast to the next town of Los Gigantes. Unfortunately it don't go round the first cove and I had to climb a series of steep steeps which then dropped down to a road on the other side. I followed the road to another short path that reached a hill that curved round and down into Los Gigantes. I didn't go right down to the harbour but turned after I had been running for 20 minutes. I followed the same route back but couldn't find the stairway over to the path along the coast. I ran on all directions and ended up asking a taxi driver for directions to Puerto Santiago. He pointed to another long flight of stairs that climbed up the hillside. I headed up, not running they were far too steep and long, and at the top found it was a short cut and when I reached the bottom of the hill ended up at the turning to our resort. I stretched again then made my way up to the flat for breakfast. My time with a lot of stops and starts was 44:35 minutes. When I was running it was at a good pace so probably at least 7 km.
After breakfast I showered then we headed out for town to get a few jobs done. First it was to get connected to the Internet, the office was open this morning and it cost €25 for 30 days which was quite reasonable. The next thing was to get a bus ticket. You buy a ticket for €15 and the cost of each journey is recorded electronically on the back until the money is used up. We went to the Tourist Info office to check where to purchase this ticket. The woman directed us to a newsagent who sold them, while there I asked about a gym. She said there was one up at the top of hill behind. We checked it out first and it was quite a steep climb to where the sports complex was. We had a look round and the gym was well equipped and there were plenty of aerobics, power pump and spinning classes as well as the use of the swimming pool. The price was very reasonable and we both signed up for 2.5 months which cost only €115. After that we found the newsagent and got a bus ticket which we will use tomorrow to reach the starting point for a walk. Before returning to the flat we did some shopping at Mercadona and replaced the hand cream that was confiscated by security at Bristol Airport. Finally on the way back we bought new hiking poles to assist us on the many walks we plan to do while here.
In the flat we tried out the Internet. It only allowed us to operate one computer at a time. Moira downloaded the last two days 'Telegraph' first to her iPad then I logged on and downloaded them to mine. Next I tried out the radio and managed to get it working well. We listened to Jeremy Vine while we had lunch out on the veranda. The weather was very nice, it was cool when I ran this morning and it was hazy while we did the shopping but now it was clear and bright and getting warm. We decided to head out for a walk once our meal was finished.
We took the route to Los Gigantes that I ran this morning. When crossed the stairs at the end of the cliff path I found out how I had missed them coming back this morning. The opening looked like the entrance to somebody's house and that had caused my confusion. When we got to Los Gigantes we headed right down to the harbour and walked round the jetty below the high harbour ball. The harbour was a marina for mainly large cabin cruisers but the real business was selling sailing and boat trips whale and dolphin spotting. There were lots of different craft offering trips and one that was particularly attractive was a replica of an old pirate sailing ship. There were also regular water taxis, one was the Masca Express, plying between the harbour and Masca Bay. There is a trek that they were advertising the route finished in Masca from Los Gigantes and you caught the water taxi back from Masca Bay at the end of the walk. We plan to do that one day.
After going round the harbour we made our way back. We took the short cut that the taxi driver directed me to this morning and we were soon back at the flat. It had been a nice walk and we were quite tired after it. So it was a relaxing evening after dinner watching TV. This was mainly quizzes from 'The Chase' early on to 'Only Connect' later. The evening finished with the first part of a 'Silent Witness' mystery. It was a bit gruesome and Moira went to bed early to avoid the blood and violence.
