A walk to Alcala in the wind on TENERIFE

Tuesday 10 February.

I seem to have lost interest in running. My leg was feeling much better but I decided to give the jogging a miss again. Maybe it is that there is not a lot of variation in the routes and it all gets much of a sameness. I made the breakfast again and we planned to go for a walk today along the coast to Alcala. I wanted to go to the gym first and left at 9 am; I told Moira to leave at 10 am, meet me at the finish of my work-out and we would start our walk from there.

The weather wasn't looking very nice as I walked to the gym. It was very cloudy, a wind blowing and there seemed to a touch of rain in the air. I did the leg exercise sequence that I did on Saturday. I went through the machines one after the other again and did 4x20 reps on each. For the last rep of each exercise I increased the weights a notch. I finished with some ab exercises and Moira arrived at 10:15 am. She had the daypack with our lunch and she had packed the iPads so that we could find a seat and read while watching the sea and surf.

We headed through the town and down to the dirt road along the coast. Instead of taking the right turn to he scrambling section before the esplanade we went left. It took us to the track between the banana plantations that I had investigated on a run a few weeks ago but turned back then before finding where it led to. It was a long straight track with a number of estates walled off and covered with nylon netting to protect the banana plants. At the end we reached the first street that runs from the main road to the beach area. Instead we turned up and walked along the cycle track to the far road going to the esplanade. At the bottom we turned left, going further along the prom which ended at a large bay with a mooring jetty but nothing much else. We were looking for a sheltered place to sit and have a cup of coffee from the flask. It was still miserable weather, all right for walking but not very good for sitting around. The heavy cloud cover was still there as well as the strong wind which wasn't too warm, also we kept feeling spots of rain. We decided to head back and spend the afternoon at the flat instead. When we reached the beach next to the toilets halfway along the prom it was sheltered from the wind and we found a bench where we sat and had a cup of coffee with a chocolate waver biscuit.

After our break we picked up the speed and walked briskly on the way back. We had been taking it easy going out into the wind but now we had the benefit of the breeze at our backs. There were quite a number of people out walking but most of them were well wrapped up from the cold, not like me in shorts and t-shirt. When we arrived back it was time for lunch, we had had a good 2 hour walk to get the legs moving.

We sat out on the veranda for lunch but afterwards came inside, it was too cold. I had a shower then relaxed reading my book until the quizzes on TV. After dinner it was another poor night on TV so we watched the remainder of the 'Coast to Coast' walk DVD. Next I turned on the Freeview recorder and put on a film. It was Kirk Douglas in 'Spartacus' . It was about 3 hours long and I managed to watch only half of it, the rest can wait until tomorrow night.
